Bluebird Info

There are three main types of bluebirds in North America. They are the Eastern Bluebird, the Mountain Bluebird and the Western Bluebird. The main one in Minnesota is the Eastern Bluebird. The information I'm going to include about bluebirds as it references my Eagle Project will be about the Eastern Bluebird.

Bluebirds - I love to see the bluebirds in my area. Around April 1st I started seeing bluebirds around my house and around my bluebird houses. When I went out again after I put my houses up I found out that bluebirds are very noisy, but they have beautiful voices. The following link has more info related to bluebirds in Minnesota.

Habitat - Bluebirds are kind of picky. They like to be by the woods but not in the woods. I put my bird houses at least 100 yards apart. I put each of the bird houses in pairs so the bluebirds didn't have to fight sparrows and other birds for a house. I also made sure the birds had and open area in front of each house the birds have it easy to fly in and out of each house. After investigating the type of habitat they need to help them thrive I approached Hunt Utilities Group to put out houses on the HUG campus. The Happy Dancing Turtle group is the non-profit organization on the HUG campus that signed off on my Eagle Project. The campus has a nice mix a woods and open areas. It also has a water source nearby. Bluebirds generally like areas with open grassy areas and maybe a mix of a light density of trees. They like to eat insects so are a great benefit to have around. Types of Houses- Bluebirds are cavity dwellers but they don't make their own. They have to rely on other animals or natural cavities in an area to dwell in. That is why it is so important for us to place bluebird houses up for the birds. The more cavity dwellings in an area of their ideal habitat the more they will prosper in an area. It is desirable to have 2 house in close proximity so that if another species goes in one of the houses the bluebird will still try to use the other house. I built the Eastern Bluebird Nestbox.
